EC Wall Track Tilter Mechanisms

Many of the configurations of the Ergomart EC Wall Track come with the capability to adjust the tilting angle of the monitor. The part of the stand or arm responsible for this feature is the tilter mechanism, also called tilter head or simply tilter. The three tilter head options are: Standard, Spring and HD Spring. Our Wall Track systems are usually offered with the Standard and HD Spring tilter. Here are the three tilter heads and the approximate weight range each supports.

RANGE OF MOTION

All three tilter heads can be adjusted from +90° to -44°, where 0° corresponds to the vertical orientation. A friction resistance set screw can be tightened and loosened to adjust the amount of effort needed for changing the monitor angle. The Spring and HD Spring Tilter mechanisms provide additional lift to keep the monitor from tilting forward.

TILTER BEHAVIOR BASED ON PAYLOAD

Tilter head selection is influenced by several factors.

First, even within the supported range, each type of tilter comes with a slightly different behavior depending on the weight of the payload. The charts below can be understood with the following context:

Green: Tilts easily to and from various positions by hand. Tilter has "fluid feel" promoting quick adjustments to tilt.
Yellow: Tilts from position with modest effort. Tilter adjusts quickly, though may not feel "fluid".
Orange: Tilt will hold monitors in position when tightened. Instant tilting by hand is restricted and less comfortable.

Second, the thickness of the payload affects the weight than can be handled. Monitors, All-in-One PCs, and other tilter head mounted devices vary in depth and center of gravity. Also, the addition of a thin client holder or other accessories such as a scanner bracket between the monitor and tilter mechanism can dramatically change the overall effective depth. Thinner devices (less than 2" thick) weighing as much as thicker overall payloads put less stress on the tilter mechanism. Two monitors of the same weight with substantially differing depths may require different torque settings to be applied to the resistance set screw.

The precise applicability of tilter mechanisms can be somewhat subjective. The graphic below references the color code of the chart shown above. This information is intended to be nominal and is provided for guidance when matching a payload to the tilter mechanism. If you plan to purchase multiple units, we always recommend purchasing a single device first for testing.

The third factor is that the spring tilter differs slightly from the standard tilter in its behavior: the tilt resistance exhibits some nonlinearity throughout the range of motion. Hence, if the monitor is tilted down past a -10 degree angle, the spring is engaged with increasing resistance. In the opposite direction, tilting the monitor up past the +45 degree angle re-engages the spring, which results in increased resistance. Beyond +45 degrees, further adjustment to the resistance set screw of the spring may be required. The Spring Tilter is therefore not recommended for tablets and other devices that are typically positioned at near horizontal angles.

Finally, when the weight of the payload falls into overlapping tilter weight capabilities, the tilter selection depends on how the monitor will be used. For frequent adjustment or heavy touch screen use, we recommend the stronger tilter head. For a flat screen monitor of standard thickness without a touchscreen, a Standard Tilter head is typically preferred.
